Michigan football recruiting update as Jim Harbaugh added a vital piece to his 2017 class.
February 16, 2016Jim Harbaugh only knows two things right now: recruiting and breathing.
As we dive into the low point of the college football calendar — with nothing more than practices and a spring game to look forward to — Harbaugh isn’t just sitting around waiting for the new season of House of Cards to be released. No, he’s busy planning for the future.
The next few years for the Wolverines were already looking pretty bright with top prospects like Rashan Gary and Kareem Walker headlining the No. 6 recruiting class in the nation from the 2016 cycle.
But on Monday night, fans in Ann Arbor, Mich. received a pleasant surprise in the form of a commitment from 4-star quarterback Dylan McCaffrey. Rated as the No. 3 quarterback and No. 39 overall prospect in the 2017 class, McCaffrey displays a strong arm with some athleticism, but the most impressive portions of his game have to be his fundamentals and his form from the pocket.
McCaffrey, whose father Ed McCaffrey played wide receiver at Stanford and in the NFL, watched his brother, Christian McCaffrey, put together a solid season for the Cardinal in 2015 that culminated with a photo finish in the Heisman Trophy race — Derrick Henry won, of course. But Christian will be back in the mix in 2016, and then, come 2017, Dylan will have his shot.
Michigan now has five commits in the 2017 class including 4-star offensive tackle JaRaymond Hall, 3-star running back Kurt Taylor, unranked tight end Carter Dunaway and unranked cornerback Benjamin St-Juste.
Some of the Wolverines’ top targets include 4-star wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones, 4-star defensive tackle Marvin Wilson and 4-star defensive end Joshua Kaindoh.
Having McCaffrey already committed will only help attract more big-time recruits, specifically on the offensive side of the ball.
If you thought Harbaugh’s first year in Ann Arbor was successful, wait and see what the future holds with the kind of talent he’s putting in maize and blue.
