A Michigan football recruiting update for the week of April 7, 2016.

Michigan was on the move in the past week, climbing two spots in the 2017 class rankings from No. 10 to No. 8 thanks to two new commitments.

O’Maury Samuels, a 4-star running back from Los Lunas, N.M. pledged to the Wolverines on Saturday.

His decision came one day after 3-star defensive tackle Phil Paea announced his commitment to play for Jim Harbaugh.

Samuels, the No. 23 ranked running back in the class, is a 5-foot-10, 188-pound playmaker in every sense of the word. He has the lower-body strength to fight through tackles, the balance to keep his footing and the acceleration to leave defensive backs in his dust.

He can catch out of the backfield, and has the vision to determine whether he should cut up through the C-gap or bounce out to the sideline.

Samuels is a great compliment to another Michigan commit, 3-star running back A.J. Dillon, who is more of a downhill runner looking to power his way through defenders.

As for Paea, the 6-foot-4, 271-pounder from Berrien Springs, Mich. brings experience playing both sides of the ball.

As a guard, he moves well and stays tight to the line when he pulls. On the defensive side of the ball, his pad level rises up too often, but he does a good job of reading ball carriers and disengaging to close cutback lanes.

He also held offers from Notre Dame and Michigan State, and is set to visit Oregon at the end of the month. If Michigan can hold on to him through the process, Paea can serve as a valuable piece in the trenches for Harbaugh’s staff.

Michigan also hosted No. 12 outside linebacker and No. 60 overall recruit, Jordan Anthony, from Bradenton, Fla., for a visit. The 4-star prospect was wowed by Ann Arbor, Mich.

“Everything was great there. [I] enjoyed meeting all of the coaches for the first time, especially Don Brown, Chris Partridge, Greg Mattison, and of course Coach Harbaugh,” Anthony told Campus Insiders. “[I] loved the campus, and the game atmosphere was everything I thought it would be.”

As spring practice continues, here’s a look at how Michigan’s 2017 class shakes out right now.
