Michigan will host 5-star recruits Baron Browning, Alex Leatherwood, along with some other offensive line targets when the Wolverines welcome Wisconsin to Ann Arbor on Saturday in a top-10 matchup.
September 27, 2016Michigan hosting 5-star recruits Baron Browning, Alex Leatherwood, and others for Wisconsin game.
On Monday night, 5-star prospect Baron Browning announced he’d be spending one of his five official visits in Ann Arbor this Saturday when the Wolverines welcome the Wisconsin Badgers to town for a top-10 showdown.
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound prospect from Kennedale, Texas is the No. 2 outside linebacker and No. 25 overall player in the 2017 recruiting class. He holds offers from about as many Power 5 programs as you can name, so Michigan has some tough competition. Browning is scheduled to take official visits to Ohio State on Nov. 25, one week after he visits UCLA.
When he visits the Big House, though, Browning won’t be alone. He’ll be joined by 5-star offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood, who has been committed to Alabama since June of 2015.
On Sunday, Leatherwood, the No. 3 offensive tackle and No. 18 player in the country, announced his plans to visit Ann Arbor.
The Wolverines certainly need to impress Leatherwood. They landed a commitment from 4-star offensive tackle Kai-Leon Herbert in July, but the Florida Gators have not taken their foot off the gas, and there is a strong feeling Herbert could flip from Jim Harbaugh’s program to Jim McElwain’s.
As for Browning, the rival Ohio State Buckeyes have been putting in a lot of effort to land his commitment, which will come at the end of November. However, it seems highly unlikely Browning goes that far from home. Texas seems to be on the up-and-up with Charlie Strong leading the way. It seems as though — for now — Browning is headed to Austin. That won’t stop Michigan from trying to charm the socks off him when he’s on campus.
There will be other big-time prospects visiting the Wolverines this weekend. Jedrick Willis, a 4-star prospect, is the No. 9 offensive tackle and No. 62 overall player in the class. Michigan seemingly has a much better shot at Willis than it does with Leatherwood, whose recruitment will come down to the wire between Alabama and Florida.
Willis is a big body at 6-foot-5, 318 lbs and would help fill the loss of Herbert, should he decide to flip.
If, for some reason, Willis doesn’t decide on Michigan, and Herbert flips, the Wolverines are trying to provide a contingency plan with 4-star prospect Chuck Filiaga. The Aledo, Texas native is the No. 20 offensive tackle and No. 179 overall player in the nation. He’s 6-foot-6, 335 lbs and has a ton of power to compliment some very long arms.
The offensive line is clearly a position group of need for the Wolverines, and this is a big weekend to align a few more pieces of that puzzle.
