Five-star defensive end Micah Parsons received a scholarship offer from the Clemson Tigers on Tuesday, adding the defending national champions to the list of schools trying to flip the Penn State commit.

He’s been fully committed to the Nittany Lions since Feb. 27, 2016, but that hasn’t stopped other schools from blowing up his phone.

Five-star prospect Micah Parsons is ranked as the No. 2 defensive end and No. 3 overall player in the CI 25 player rankings for the 2018 recruiting class, and it’s well deserved.

The 6-foot-3, 236-pound recruit is a menace off the edge and could evolve into an elite JACK linebacker at the next level. That’s a big reason why Penn State is trying so hard to hold onto his commitment.

Up until this point, Big Ten rival Ohio State has been the biggest threat to the Nittany Lions, but other schools are getting in the mix, trying to flip Parsons from Penn State. Alabama, Florida State, Georgia and Miami are all making runs. But the latest competitor is the defending national champion.

On Tuesday, Clemson extended a scholarship offer to the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania native.

There is obviously a long way to go in Parsons’ recruitment, but if the Tigers can pull off the improbable, they’d have a chance at completing something truly rare.

You see, Clemson is already one of the final two choices for 5-star defensive end Xavier Thomas. The Florence, South Carolina native made it clear in December he intends to play college football in his home state despite his transfer to the IMG Academy. That leaves the Tigers and the South Carolina Gamecocks left in the running.

Thomas has said before he probably would have already been committed to South Carolina if Steve Spurrier had remained the head coach, but now Will Muschamp is running the show, and the window of opportunity is more open than it ever has been for Clemson.

Coming off their first national title since 1981, a strong 2017 season for the Tigers could draw a commitment from Thomas. But if Dabo Swinney’s staff can gain ground and get Parsons on campus for an official visit this fall, we could potentially see Clemson walk away with the top-three players in the country — including the top two defensive recruits.

Swinney’s staff already secured a commitment from 5-star quarterback Trevor Lawrence in December, and many expect Thomas to roll with the Tigers as well.

But imagine if Clemson can wiggle its way into the Parsons sweepstakes. We’d have at least one season (probably the only one) of Thomas and Parsons serving on the same defensive line as Dexter Lawrence. As bookend defensive ends, they’d terrorize the ACC.

The expectation is for Parsons to honor his pledge to Penn State, but there’s always a chance. Parsons told 247Sports he’s planning a visit to a few schools with Clemson included, and the Tigers will be among the five or six schools to make a final list later on in his recruitment. If he flipped his commitment, what a recruiting haul that would be.

Oh and — not for nothing — but Clemson is also in heavy pursuit of 5-star running back Zamir White, the No. 4 player in the 2018 class.

Shoot for the stars and fall amongst the clouds, right, Dabo?
