    Why You Need To Care

The season has officially gotten away from Memphis, the onetime Group of Five darling that knocked off Ole Miss and rose as high as No. 15 in the rankings. But that feels like ages ago now that the Tigers have dropped three in a row to the upper echelon of the American, Navy, Houston and Temple. All that’s left now is to grab some momentum before heading off to a consolation prize bowl game. SMU is coming off an important win, pummeling Tulane, 49-21. The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak and provided rookie head coach Chad Morris and his Mustangs with something positive to build upon during a long offseason.

    Why SMU Will Win

There’s no quit in these Ponies. Morris did a great job of preparing for the Green Wave, and the Mustangs executed beautifully in the ground game. They churned out 323 rushing yards and six touchdowns, led by QB Matt Davis and rookie RB Xavier Jones. SMU is confident, while Memphis is demoralized, the recipe for an upset this weekend at the Liberty Bowl.

    Why Memphis Will Win

Finally, a defense the Tigers ought to be able to dominate. The usually potent Memphis attack was held to without a touchdown—and to a season-low 232 yards—last week against Temple. But SMU is a much different opponent, yielding 44 points a game and almost six yards a carry. This is where the Tigers get back to flourishing on offense around QB Paxton Lynch and his deep group of backs and receivers.

    Player Who Matters

Justin Fuente’s offense is struggling, but so is his D. Memphis has been pushed around the past month, which should concern the staff with SMU heading to town. If linebackers Wynton McManis and Jackson Dillon fail to wrap up in space, it’ll be a long afternoon for the host as it tries to track down Jones and Davis.

    What’s Going To Happen?

SMU cannot be taken lightly … and Memphis knows it. The Tigers, desperate to end the losing skid, will operate with a sense of urgency. And while the budding Mustang attack will continue to have success, it won’t be enough to offset the team’s defensive holes. Lynch will enjoy his best day in over a month, accounting for four scores in the shootout victory.
