    Why You Need To Care

Maryland is in a holding pattern as it plays its final game of the season and then goes on a coaching search. Interim head man Mike Locksley isn’t the guy, and now on an eight-game losing streak, the Terps are all about just winning this game and moving on. They’ve been competitive, and they’ve had a few chances in some interesting games, but the program needs a reboot.

Rutgers is closing out a rough season, but finishing 5-7 wouldn’t look all that awful considering the drama with the coaching staff and several key players throughout the first part of the year. On a four-game losing streak before beating Army, ending with a two-game winning run would be a decent way to wrap things up. Like Maryland, Rutgers could use a redo, but there might not need to be a total gut job – a good performance this week might make a little bit of a statement.

    Why Maryland Will Win

For all the problems and issues – primarily having a nightmare of a time turning the ball over – but the running game has been cranking it up at times. Indiana’s run defense gets blown over by a soft breeze, but the Terps still showed what they could do with 319 yards and three rushing scores last week. Brandon Ross went off, running for 250 yards and three scores, and he might be able to do it again against a Rutgers run defense that’s been okay, but hardly great.

    Why Rutgers Will Win

What’s Rutgers’ biggest problem? Pass defense. Fortunately, that’s not an issue this week against a Maryland passing game that doesn’t exist. Defensively, the Scarlet Knights should be able to stack the box all game long – the Terps don’t and can’t get down the field on a consistent basis. The big key for Rutgers is to win the turnover battle. Maryland has been the worst team in the nation in turnover margin, and other than last week, it’s almost always good for a three giveaways a game. Rutgers should be able to capitalize.

    Player Who Matters

Maryland senior RB Brandon Ross ran for 100 yards once last year – cranking out 108 yards and two scores on ten carries in the loss to Rutgers. He closed out each of his first three regular seasons with a 100-yard ground game, usually saving some of his best for last. Last week he tore off 250 yards and three scores on just 19 carries against Indiana after running just 11 times for 51 yards in the previous three games. In his last game of his career, is he going to be a workhorse? That’s not really his style, but he’ll be fed the ball.

    What’s Going To Happen?

Neither team has a decent, consistent offense, and neither one has been able to do much to stop the better attacks. This should be an even game with lots of big plays, but Rutgers will survive at home with the offense finally starting to bust out – even if it’s a bit too late.
