Mark Richt and the Maryland Terrapins are reportedly discussing the open head coaching position. Here's the latest on the coaching carousel.
December 1, 2015It didn’t take long for Mark Richt to catch the eyes of other program’s looking for a new head coach.
Just a day after being fired by the Bulldogs, Richt spoke with the Maryland Terrapins regarding their open position. Richt finished the 2015 season with a 9-3 overall record, 5-3 conference mark, and tied for second in the SEC East.
InsideMDSports of 247Sports reported on Monday evening that Maryland could even host Richt as early as Tuesday to further discuss the job.
“It’s unclear if Richt has finalized plans to visit Maryland Tuesday, but a source told IMS there are ongoing discussions about a meeting. He has a connection to the administration at Maryland; associate athletic director Damon Evans his athletic director at Georgia from 2004 to 2010.”
Richt spent a very successful 15 years at the helm of Georgia. He’s widely regarded as one of the best coaches in college football, but could never get the Bulldogs over the championship hump. Unfortunately for him, he coached in the SEC when Urban Meyer and Nick Saban were winning multiple championships, and other programs like Auburn and LSU were also adding titles to their trophy cases.
He finished with a 145-51 overall record (83-37 SEC), two conference titles, and six top 10 rankings in the final AP poll.
As the old saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s trasher. In this case, that could result in a huge hire for the University of Maryland.
