Four-star wide receiver Mark Pope has pledged to Miami. The Hurricanes strengthened one of the best 2018 classes in the country.

If Miami is going to continue its revival under Mark Richt and start better competing with the likes of Clemson in the ACC, the Hurricanes are going to need more players like Mark Pope. And more recruiting classes like the one they are continuing to put together for 2018.

The four-star wide receiver committed to the Hurricanes on Monday, choosing to stay in-state and play for Richt and Co. His addition strengthens what is currently one of the top classes in the country. And that’s huge for a team competing in the same conference as the defending College Football Playoff national champion Tigers.

“At this time I would like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to play football,” Pope wrote. “Without God and my family I don’t know where I would be. I will [sic] like to thank every coach gave me a chance to be apart [sic] of their football team, but after praying on it and discussing it with my family I truly believe the University of Miami is where I fit best both education wise and football wise! At this time I will [sic] like to commit to The U baby!”

Pope is one of the top pass-catchers in the entire 2018 class and was considered by many recruiting analysts to be leaning toward his hometown team. The Miami Southridge High School star, who was at IMG Academy for the annual two-day NFA 7-on-7 Southeast Regional over the weekend, visited Miami last Friday. Perhaps that visit sealed the deal.

The 6-foot, 163-pounder has a chance to emerge as a top slot receiver because of his ability to brush past defenders and change directions at will. He also has the ability to stretch the field vertically.

Pope joins fellow Southridge receiver Daquris Wiggins, who is also committed to the Hurricanes, as well as four-star wide receiver Brian Hightower, who is an IMG Academy player pledged to Miami. The ‘Canes also have a pledge from four-star quarterback Artur Sitkowski, who chose Miami over both Florida and Florida State.
