Jim McElwain’s staff sure does have impeccable timing.

Hours after the Gators lost a commitment from 3-star running back Adarius Lemons, they replaced him with another halfback in the 2017 recruiting class. To be more precise, they replaced him with the No. 15 running back in the state of Florida and the No. 88 running back in the nation.

Malik Davis committed to Florida Wednesday morning, keeping the Gators’ class at No. 12 in the recruiting team rankings with 16 total commits.

The Tampa, Florida native released a statement regarding his decision.

“First, I would like to thank God because none of this would be possible without him. Also, I would like to thank him for putting me in this position to go on and play the game I love so much. Plus, thank [you to] my parents, who’ve been my biggest supporters throughout this whole process. I would like to thank all of my coaches who helped me better y game throughout the years. I truly appreciate all the love and support you guys have shown me through this whole process. With that being said, I would like to announce the school I will be furthering my education at. After much prayer and [thought], I will be committing to the University of Florida.”

In comparison to Lemons, Davis is of another breed. The former is a violent runner with an absurd ability to accelerate and distance himself from defenders. However, Lemons does have a hard time keeping his footing while trying to break tackles.

As far as Davis is concerned, there are a lot of reasons to be excited about his game. He’s not a top-end speed kind of guy, but he shows great patience and allows his blocks to develop before he makes his move. Davis’ vision is what really separates him from other tailbacks. He sees holes open before there’s a lane to run through. He also keeps his balance with a low center of gravity. Davis absorbs hits and breaks through tackles with ease. He just doesn’t have the speed or acceleration that Lemons possesses.
