December 29, 2016Four-star safety Maleik Gray is committed to Tennessee, but he recently discussed the potential for him to flip his commitment to Florida State.
Jimbo Fisher’s staff pulled in its biggest commit of the 2017 recruiting class on Tuesday night when 5-star running back Cam Akers committed to Florida State.
However, the Seminoles are far from done. They’re looking to add to the defensive side of the ball, and one of their top targets is 4-star safety Maleik Gray, who’s been committed to Tennessee since June.
At the Under Armour All-America Game practice on Thursday, Gray, a La Vergne, Tennessee native, spoke with Tomahawk Nation about a potential flip to FSU.
“It’s something I’m really considering. I just wanna’ make sure it’s really the best fit for me and the best decision for the next three or four years of my life,” Gray said.
There is more to it, though. Gray acknowledged that former Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey is the player he models his game after because their skill sets are similar. Moreover, Gray knows Ramsey personally and trains with his father, Lamont Ramsey.
All that’s left is taking a trip to Tallahassee and fully marinating on whether flipping the commitment is in his best interest.
“They want me to come down on an official visit. Coach [Randy] Sanders [has] been at my neck so bad about it. He’s like, telling me he’s not gonna’ stop recruiting me until it’s over and done with,” Gray said.
FSU already has one safety committed in the class, 4-star prospect Cyrus Fagan. With 5-star cornerback Stanford Samuels III also on board, flipping Gray would set the ‘Noles up for an elite secondary for years to come.
