Report: Mack Brown, Virginia Cavaliers Share Interest

Mack Brown and the Virginia Cavaliers reportedly share interest. Here's the latest on Virginia's coaching search.

    November 30, 2015

It’s been two seasons since Mack Brown has coached a football game, and apparently he’s feeling the itch to get back on the gridiron.

Brown is reportedly interested in Virginia’s head coaching position, which opened Sunday after former coach Mike London and the Cavaliers parted ways.

“Mack’s absolutely interested in Virginia,” stated Bobby Burton of 247Sports. “He knows the conference and what it takes to win there. And he’s not a guy to cut corners on academics like a lot of coaches will.”

According to 247Sports, the Cavaliers also have interest in Brown, but it doesn’t appear to be significant at this time.

“It is very early in the process right now, and there are a lot of names being mentioned,” reports Jamie Oakes of Wahoos247. “I believe Mack Brown wants the job badly, but at this point – right now – the interest doesn’t seem to be as strong on Virginia’s end.”

Brown is working for ESPN right now as a college football commentator. He’s 64 years old, so if he wants to jump back into the coaching ranks, it would have to be sooner rather than later.

He undoubtedly has the career resume to warrant a hire, but one has to wonder if Brown would cut it on today’s recruiting trail — especially at a place like Virginia, which hasn’t seen a lot of success lately. The Cavaliers have just one 9-win season since 2000 and a collective 26 wins in the past six years.

For a program that needs an overhaul from the ground up, it might be better to go after a younger hire who can inject a shot of life into Virginia.
