September 28, 2016Florida quarterback Luke Del Rio will return to practice on Wednesday, but his status for Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt is still up in the air.
Austin Appleby played fairly well in the Gators’ 38-28 loss to Tennessee this past Saturday, throwing for 296 yards and three touchdowns with one interception while filling in for starting quarterback Luke Del Rio.
Appleby’s time under center might come to an end sooner than most thought, as Florida head coach Jim McElwain said that Del Rio will return to practice on Wednesday.
“He’ll go out today, Wednesday, here actually,” McElwain said during the weekly SEC Coaches Teleconference. “He’ll throw some skellies, some routes on air, and probably two of the different team periods just to take a look. We’ll see how it goes and see how it responds from there.”
Del Rio was off to a good start in the 2016 season as the starting quarterback for Florida, throwing for 762 yards and six touchdowns to only two interceptions while leading the team to a 3-0 record. In the third quarter of the North Texas game on September 17, Del Rio suffered a sprained left knee that would knock him out for the remainder of that game, a 32-0 Florida win. The injury caused him to miss last week’s loss to Tennessee.
The Gators might not need Del Rio’s services this week, as they host an overmatched Vanderbilt team that needed overtime to down Western Kentucky last week. However, a tough stretch that includes LSU, Missouri, Georgia, and Arkansas follows.
