Florida Gators quarterback Luke Del Rio left Saturday’s win over North Texas with a left leg injury. Del Rio’s status is uncertain long term, but coach Jim McElwain said he likely won’t play against Tennessee.

Florida coach Jim McElwain had every reason to be upset, and he didn’t hide it.

McElwain showed his anger on the field after a North Texas player hit Luke Del Rio low in the third quarter, injuring Del Rio’s left leg and forcing him to leave the game. The Gators went on to win, but it came at a cost.

Del Rio is likely to miss next week’s SEC showdown with Tennessee, and possibly beyond. The extend of the injury is uncertain, but it appears to be serious.

“Luke is getting his leg looked at and it doesn’t look great,” McElwain told reporters after the game. “We’ll do what we do … we’ll get someone ready and move forward.”

Austin Appleby replaced Del Rio and is likely to get the start against the Volunteers. The former Purdue quarterback went 2 of 3 for 30 yards.
