LSU will wear a helmet decal to honor Mike the Tiger during Saturday's game against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Mike VI passed away earlier this week after a bout with cancer.
October 14, 2016Following the live mascot’s death, LSU will be paying tribute to their fallen friend as they take the field this Saturday.
LSU’s beloved live mascot, Mike VI, died on Tuesday after a four month bout with cancer. Mike was 11 years old, and had been LSU’s live mascot for the past nine years.
Following his death, fans and even opposing schools and mascots showered LSU with support and condolences. Texas’ mascot Bevo XV sent flowers to LSU, as did Arkansas’ Tusk, who included a letter reading, “Goodbye, old friend. May your hunts be fruitful and prosperous at those great hunting grounds in the beyond.”
Mike was known by most college athletic fans for his intimidating presence on the LSU campus, and on the field, outside the visiting locker room to put a scare into opponents as they took the field.
This Saturday as LSU hosts Southern Mississippi in Baton Rouge, the Tigers will be wearing a special “VI” decal on the back of their helmets to honor the late mascot.

It remains to be seen when LSU will replace Mike VI with another tiger, but one thing is for certain: this version of Mike will be sorely missed on the LSU campus.
