LSU football threatened to be canceled. Twitter reactions came in hot and heavy following the address from Governor John Bel Edwards.
February 12, 2016The state of Louisiana is facing a $940 million deficit, and Governor John Bel Edwards is ready to take whatever measures are necessary to fix the budget crisis.
In order to alleviate the problem on hand, Edwards is proposing a large tax increase, which has received considerable opposition.
According to The Times-Picayune, he addressed the entire state of Louisiana on Thursday night regarding the severe financial situation.
If the tax increase does not pass, one major sector that will be negatively impacted are state-funded universities, who, Edwards claims, would be faced with bankruptcy.
To drive his point home, Edwards hit on a sensitive subject with citizens of the state: LSU football.
While the issue is much larger than LSU athletics, the Tigers are what will turn the mainstream’s head. Edwards is using the idea to drive his initiative home and get his resolution passed. A season without LSU football seems inconceivable.
“Student athletes across the state would be ineligible to play next semester,” Edwards says due to universities having to shut down classes. “I don’t say this to scare you. But I am going to be honest with you.”
“That means you can say farewell to college football next fall.”
With a statement like that, the Twitter reactions were bound to come in hot and heavy.
When is the last time a Governor was impeached? Les Miles survived, will Gov. John Bel Edwards? https://t.co/4M9IkFSUSV

If John Bel Edwards is really shutting down LSU's 2016 season and Leonard Fournette is looking for a landing spot, holla!

@LarryHolder I think they need to call the Governor's bluff. He would have riots in the streets if there was no LSU football

Go ahead and shut down LSU football next fall. You'd need the UN peacekeepers involved to shut down the riots it would cause
