February 7, 2017LSU head coach Ed Orgeron is in the process of completing his coaching staff in Baton Rouge, and a few candidates have emerged for the job vacancies with the Tigers.
As soon as Ed Orgeron got the full-time job as head coach of the Tigers, it was understood he would mix and match to form the coaching staff he wanted in Baton Rouge.
That’s the nature of the game when a regime change takes place. Les Miles’ guys go out, and Orgeron’s picks come in. Last week, it was announced that two of the names heading out were wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig and running backs coach Jabbar Juluke. The 2016-17 season was the first for both with the program.
Now, we could be closing in on discovering their replacements.
A few candidates have reportedly emerged for LSU’s vacant coaching staff jobs, according to The Advocate. USC running backs coach Tommie Robinson is among the names being considered. While Orgeron and Robinson worked together on the Trojans staff in 2013, the connection between Miles and Robinson is a bit stronger — ironically.
Robinson and Miles coached together with the Dallas Cowboys before the former followed the Mad Hatter to Oklahoma State in 2001.
Other stops Robinson made throughout his career included coaching running backs at Memphis (2006), Miami (2007-09), Arizona Cardinals (2010-12) and Texas (2014-15) before returning to USC for this past season. He helped the Trojans notch a top-five recruiting class in the 2017 cycle by landing names such as Stephen Carr (5-star RB), Austin Jackson (5-star OT), Bubba Bolden (4-star S), Isaiah Pola-Mao (4-star S) and Levi Jones (4-star OLB).
And while he was with the Longhorns, Robinson recruited D’Onta Foreman, who had a solid career with Texas and is now projected as a second-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. So, his resume as a recruiter is solid, and that will go a long way in Baton Rouge, as the Tigers have to battle with Alabama for prospects year after year.
One other name has joined Robinson on the short list of candidates, and that’s Louisiana Tech running backs coach Mickey Joseph. The former Nebraska quarterback has made stops at Tulane, Alabama State, Nicholls State, Central Oklahoma, Desire Street Academy High School, Langston, Alcorn State and Grambling from 1999 to 2015 before joining the Bulldogs this past season.
Both Robinson and Joseph have coached wide receivers in the past as well, so they could both realistically join the staff if no other names emerge with one replacing Craig and the other taking over for Juluke.
