A night of celebration for one of their teammates took a turn for the worse early Sunday morning.
According to reports, Louisville linebackers James Hearns and Henry Famurewa were two of three victims shot at a party where people were celebrating Cardinals quarterback Lamar Jackson winning the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night. The name of the third victim has not been released, but Louisville Metro Police confirmed that the victim also is a Louisville student.
The injuries to Hearns and Famurewa are not considered life-threatening. And no suspects are in custody.
Witness Jayvon Smith told Louisville ABC affiliate WHAS that he was celebrating Jackson’s win with multiple Louisville athletes when an argument began. It then spilled out into the street where shots were fired. WHAS reports that a woman and a man were taken to the hospital, and another man later showed up to the hospital with a gunshot wound.
The university sent out an alert to students at 4:07 a.m. warning them of the shooting, and it sent a follow-up text at 7:48 a.m. stating it was clear.
The university has yet to officially comment on the incident, with many having traveled to New York City to attend the Heisman Trophy ceremony, where Jackson became the school’s first winner and the youngest recipient ever of the award.
Hearns and Famurewa both have contributed to Louisville’s defense this season. Hearns has played every game for the Cardinals (9-3), recording a team-high eight sacks and five forced fumbles. Famurewa has a pair of sacks.
