Fresh off impressive Week 5 wins, Louisiana Tech and UTSA want to keep building this Saturday at the Alamodome. The Bulldogs have recovered from draining losses to Western Kentucky and Kansas State with wins over Florida International and UL-Lafayette to remain the West Division favorite. The Roadrunners impressively shut down UTEP in El Paso to earn their first win of 2015.
The Bulldogs have the more complete offense … by far. Tech leads the league in scoring, averaging over 35 points against FBS opponents. The mix of Kenneth Dixon’s running and the passing of Jeff Driskel easily trumps a Roadrunner offense experiencing major problems with consistency and pass protection.
The Roadrunner D, this program’s identity, has its attitude back. UTSA is coming off its best game of the season, picking off four passes, producing a safety and getting two defensive touchdowns from SS Michael Egwuagu. The Roadrunners can’t compete offensively, but they can flip the field with money plays on defense.
Tech has a new toy for Driskel, WR Marcus Gaines. The team that already boasts Dixon and receivers Trent Taylor and Paul Turner, unleashed Gaines in Week 5. The smallest member of the team burned UL-Lafayette on eight catches for 165 yards and a 72-yard score right after halftime.
UTSA is an unbalanced team with problems in the passing game. And while plucky, the Roadrunners lack the talent mix to defeat an opponent the caliber of Louisiana Tech. Provided the Bulldogs can cut down on chippy penalties, they should be in the clear by the third quarter.
