Lon Kruger spoke with The Seth Davis Show about, among other things, Oklahoma’s practice schedule and philosophy. According to the Sooners head coach, practice should be a time to work hard, but also be similarly enjoyable.

When Lon Kruger, head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners, sat down for an interview with The Seth Davis Show, one of the questions he was asked pertained to his team’s practice habits. While many coaches prefer to keep their practices under wraps, Kruger likes an open session. He enjoys fans attending and creating a family atmosphere, strongly encouraging the “for love of the game” mentality.

“We’ve done it [open practices] everywhere we’ve been,” Kruger told Davis. “We think it should be enjoyable. We love seeing families come. Dads come with their 10-year-old sons and shoot around with our guys after practice. We love our guys mingling with the kids after practice. Lifting them up to dunk. I just think what we do is a game.”

Just because there are smiles, though, Kruger expects his players to work hard. To Oklahoma’s head coach, fun and hard work don’t have to be mutually exclusive concepts.

“Now, we are going to work really hard and we are going to prepare really, really well to play as well as we possibly can. But I don’t think having fun is exclusive from doing the things we need to do to compete at the highest level.”
