November 17, 2016Les Miles’ name has come up on the shortlist for the next head coach at Baylor. Hiring him would give both Miles and the Bears program a shot at redemption.
It didn’t take long for Les Miles’ name to come up for potential coaching jobs, with the latest connection being Baylor.
Miles, who was fired in September after 11-plus seasons at LSU that included two SEC titles and a BCS national championship, has made it known that he is ready to get back into coaching and lead another school to a championship.
“I’m making myself available to search firms,” Miles has said. “I’m communicating the best I can. I am not out of [coaching], so you know.”
The Baylor job would be interesting for Miles, as the program had become a national contender but is currently navigating through a scandal that stained the school’s reputation and, among other things, hurt the team on the recruiting trail. A consistent hand is something that Baylor is looking for, and with Miles, the Bears would get a coach that is 141-55 during tenures at Oklahoma State and in Baton Rouge.
Miles is 63, though, and the other two leading candidates, North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora (54) and Cal head coach Sonny Dykes (47), are much younger in the tooth. Dykes also brings a familiarity with the state of Texas, as he grew up in Lubbock and played baseball at Texas Tech. He also spent time as an assistant for the Red Raiders football team from 2000-06.
One of the knocks on Miles during his time at LSU, and one of the main reasons for his dismissal, was his inability to adapt his offenses to the current game. Baylor has become known for its up-tempo, high-scoring attack, so hiring an offensive coordinator that has a similar mentality might be a big piece of the puzzle if Miles wants to become the next head coach in Waco.
For Baylor, it would be a home run hire that would help turn the page on dark days.
For college football fans, it would just be great to have Miles once again entertaining them with his Les-isms and grass chewing.
For Miles, who has proven time and again that he is a winner, it would be getting back to coaching and, more importantly, a chance to write a different ending to his career.
