It’s been a huge season for James Franklin and a giant leap forward for the Penn State program. After an 11-2 record and a Big Ten title, the Nittany Lions are gearing up to take on the USC Trojans on Jan. 2 in the Rose Bowl.
And as soon as that bowl game is wrapped up, Franklin’s staff can dedicate the rest of its time toward finishing off the 2017 recruiting cycle on a high note. Luckily for the Nittany Lions, they picked up a huge piece of their class on Saturday.
Five-star prospect Lamont Wade committed to Penn State, giving the Nittany Lions 18 total commits in the 2017 recruiting cycle. Penn State now sits at No. 12 in the class rankings.
Wade, who’s ranked as the No. 3 cornerback and No. 17 overall player in the country, chose the Nittany Lions over Pitt, Tennessee, UCLA and West Virginia. However, he held additional offers from a wide range of Power Five programs.
At 5-foot-11, 180 lbs Wade is an outstanding athlete. His versatility allowed him to play in the secondary and play running back for Clairton High School in Clairton, Pennsylvania.
He has the ability to win one-on-one matchups at the line of scrimmage by jamming receivers and totally disrupting the timing of their routes. If and when he does get beaten off the line, Wade has the quickness and acceleration to recover and make a play on the ball.
He’ll be a great addition to Penn State’s secondary and will be a vital weapon for Franklin’s defense moving forward.
