Two-star outside linebacker Lacedrick Brunson committed to Florida on National Signing Day, as Jim McElwain’s Gators continue to rise up the class rankings for the 2017 recruiting cycle.

With Randy Shannon taking over as the Gators’ new defensive coordinator, it wouldn’t be right if Jim McElwain’s team didn’t add some linebackers out of South Florida.

On National Signing Day, 2-star prospect Lacedrick Brunson committed to Florida despite holding offers from Arkansas, Florida Atlantic and Florida International. The real race for the Miami native, though, was between the Gators and the Panthers.

However, Shannon was able to out recruit new FIU head coach Butch Davis and led Brunson away from home to Gainesville.

At 6-foot-2, 210 lbs Brunson is flying under the radar in the cycle, but he brings a lot of versatility to Florida’s linebacker corps. He can play inside and can thrive as a run stopper there, as he reads and reacts well to the ball and can evade blockers in order to make a play. However, Brunson also has the ability to be sent off the edge late and get the quarterback.

The Gators were hoping to add 4-star outside linebacker Levi Jones, but he opted to join USC. Instead, Brunson will be joining fellow Florida linebacker commits James Houston IV, Nick Smith and Ventrell Miller, who are all rated as 3-star players.

With Shannon’s history of coaching linebackers, though, one must believe the new DC for the Gators will help each one of them reach their ceilings.
