Kirby Smart’s Georgia Press Conference Quotes: ‘Going To Be Hands On With The Entire Program’

Kirby Smart's Georgia press conference quotes roundup. Here's what he said about being hired as the Bulldogs' new head coach.

    December 7, 2015

It was 20 years ago that Kirby Smart began his college football career as a defensive back for the Georgia Bulldogs. He dedicated the next four seasons to the red and black.

Since then, Smart has found himself as Nick Saban’s right hand man. After a brief stop with Saban at LSU, Smart coached the running backs at his alma mater before following Saban to the Miami Dolphins and then to the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Smart has spent the past eight seasons building up a reputation as a tenacious recruiter and a defensive genius as the Crimson Tide’s DC. And now, he’s headed back to Georgia.

The Bulldogs introduced Smart as their next head football coach on Monday. Below is a roundup of quotes from his first press conference.

    On the Georgia Bulldogs

“I’m going to be hands on with the entire program.”

    On what UGA needs

“We need to get explosive players.”

    On winning championships

“I will not put a timetable on it. I know we will compete.”

On how he’ll conduct the program

“We will do everything the right way, which is the Georgia way.”

    On getting the UGA job

“I don’t think words can describe what it means to be the head coach at Georgia. I thought about this day all my life”

    On developing UGA’s players

“I firmly believe that you can take and develop players, and you can show improvement within a team, and we need to do that here.”

    On recruiting

“I will use every minute they allow to recruit.”

    On improving the team

“There’s no area here that doesn’t need improvement and depth.”

    On student-athletes

“Our student-athletes will represent this school with class and integrity.”

    On what’s next

“The only thing I can do is look forward of trying to assemble the best staff possible and to go out and get as much depth and good players as we can in recruiting, and make sure those are the right kind of student athletes, that’ll make the right choices and decisions when they get here, and then get back here in January and get back to the grind of assembling this team and making this team the best it can be.”
