    Why You Need To Care

Kentucky is doing it AGAIN. It couldn’t win that one game it needed over the second half of last year and didn’t go bowl, and this year it’s flubbing a 4-1 start with four straight losses – the last three in blowouts. The offense has hit the skids while the defense has gone bye-bye, but with Charlotte up next, a win over Vandy would almost certainly mean a bowl game. Lose, and the Louisville game in three weeks becomes even bigger than just a rivalry.

Vanderbilt did absolutely nothing against Florida, but it was still just one bomb of a kick away from stunning the Gators. One 9-7 loss later, the Commodores have lost three of their last four games and now need to win out against Kentucky, Texas A&M and Tennessee. The defense is in place to pull it off if only the offense could … just … do … ANYTHING. This is a positive overall situation going forward, but it would be really, really nice to come up with a second SEC win after beating Missouri a few weeks ago.

    Why Kentucky Will Win

Oh yeah, the Vandy offense. Kentucky’s attack has hit a brick wall, but that’s nothing compared to a Commodore O that has yet to score more than 17 points against anyone but Austin Peay. The running game has a little bit of hope, but the passing attack is beyond disastrous and the kicking woes have made this the worst red-zone team in college football. Kentucky, just find a way to score two touchdowns, rely on the nation’s 20th-ranked red-zone D to bend but not break, and all will be fine. However …

    Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Oh yeah, the Vandy defense. Kentucky’s offense can’t throw the ball a lick lately, either, and this is the wrong defense to face at the wrong time after coming up with just three points against Georgia. The Commodores are swarming around any midrange passes, and they’ve done a great job of keeping everyone in check after going through a rough patch in the middle of the season. However, the defense hasn’t allowed more than one touchdown pass in any game, and the run D hasn’t allowed more than 100 yards in four of the last seven games. This isn’t going to be a breakout game for the Wildcat attack.

    Player Who Matters

So who’s the star of the group who’s getting it done for the Vanderbilt defense? Sophomore LB Zach Cunningham leads the team with 69 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 12.5 tackles for loss, coming up with a monster performance against Florida last week with ten stops, a sack and two tackles for loss. He’s built more like an outside pass rusher, but he’s tough inside defender in the 3-4 who’s doing a little of everything.

    What’s Going To Happen?

Kentucky’s offense will find just enough on three drives to come up with the tough win. Lost in the problems for the Commodores has been a brutal schedule with five of the last six games on the road. The one home date? The win over Missouri. The offense will come up with a few more nice drives than normal, but UK will come through late.
