December 28, 2016Kentucky is set to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the TaxSlayer Bowl, so here are some storylines and predictions for the Wildcats ahead of the game.
Kentucky finally broke through with a bowl trip in Mark Stoops’ fourth season in Lexington, finishing the season with a major upset over Louisville. Now, the Wildcats will look to win their first bowl game since 2009 as they take on Georgia Tech in the TaxSlayer Bowl.
Here are five thoughts and predictions as the Wildcats take on the Yellow Jackets on December 31.
Boom Williams has been a force for Kentucky at running back this season, rushing for 1,135 yards and seven touchdowns. Georgia Tech has allowed 174.17 yards per game on the ground, and Williams should get some opportunities to break some big runs, along with …
… Benny Snell Jr. If it weren’t for Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts, Snell would likely be the most impressive freshman in the SEC this season. He led the team with 13 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,057 in his rookie campaign. Hopes are high for him in the next couple of seasons in Lexington.
Stephen Johnson came in at quarterback after starter Drew Barker got injured and played well, throwing for 1,862 yards and 12 touchdowns to just six interceptions. The running game has helped take pressure off of him to win the game by himself.
When you face Georgia Tech, you face the old-school triple-option attack. That is not easy for a defense to prepare for no matter how much you practice against it. Being disciplined and staying in your lanes is pertinent to stopping the option attack.
A win would be important as far as keeping momentum going into the offseason, but it could also be a step toward something special: competing for the SEC East title in 2017. The players are finally in place for Stoops to take the next step, and winning the Wildcats’ first divisional title would be huge.
