Kentucky head coach John Calipari picked up a pledge from 2017 4-star guard Jemarl Baker on Tuesday. He becomes the seventh member of the Wildcats’ class.

With John Calipari overseeing a program that operates with a revolving door of freshmen coming in and out, keeping the cupboard stocked with talent will always be a priority in Lexington.

Kentucky added to its already stellar (what else is new?) Class of 2017 by earning a pledge from Jemarl Baker, who told Scout on Tuesday that he is verbally committing to the SEC power. Baker had originally committed to Cal late in 2015, but he re-opened his recruitment when former Golden Bears head coach Cuonzo Martin left for Missouri.

“I’m honored and humbled by the experience and greatly appreciate coach Cal believing in my abilities,” Baker said. “I work extremely hard and to see it paying off means the world to me. I know I’m going to be challenged and pushed every day by the coaching staff and it’s something I look forward to. I get to compete with some of the best players on a daily basis.”

The 6-foot-3 guard from Eleanor Roosevelt High School (Corona, CA) selected the Wildcats over offers from Arizona, Maryland, Marquette, Oregon and Utah. Calipari and assistant Joel Justus had an in-home visit with Baker last Friday before the California product met with Arizona’s Sean Miller, Oregon’s Dana Altman and Marquette’s Steve Wojciechowski later in the weekend. Obviously, Coach Cal is used to closing his fair share of deals.

In recent Under Armour Association play, the Earl Watson Elite member averaged 16.8 points per game, which ranked in the top 10 in the league in scoring.

Baker is a very good shooter who has the ability to play some point at the next level. He’s more of a jump shooter than a rim attacker, but his overall game continues to improve each season because of his strong work ethic.

His pledge further strengthens yet another top-rated UK recruiting class that includes five-star prospects Hamidou Diallo, Jarred Vanderbilt, P.J. Washington, Nick Richard and Quade Green, as well as four-star recruit Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
