It would take about 17 hours to drive from Jackson, Alabama to Minneapolis, Minnesota, but rowing a boat there would take much longer than that.

On Saturday night, 4-star prospect Kendarian Handy-Holly, the No. 1-ranked safety in the state of Alabama, committed to Minnesota.

The nation’s No. 26 safety kept it simple when he announced his pledge by saying, “Row the boat.” However, his father later added on, “Congrats to my son on his commitment to the University of Minnesota. We are proud of you, son.”

At 6-foot-2, 201 lbs Handy-Holly is a versatile athlete with experience on both sides of the ball, but that’s what has helped turn him into a total ballhawk. The ball skills jump off the screen when watching him play, but that’s not all that he’ll bring to the Minnesota secondary.

He’s an above-average tackler as well and isn’t afraid to mix it up in the box. He’ll bring the kind of intense, competitive attitude that Fleck wants in the locker room.

The Golden Gophers now have 25 total commits in the cycle and have moved up to No. 28 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings.

If Fleck and his staff are able to climb a few spots — and stay there — it would be the first time in the modern recruiting era that Minnesota has signed a top-25 recruiting class.
