No. 2 Kansas comes into this one with an 8-1 record, having its only loss at the hands of the undefeated Michigan State Spartans back in mid-November.
The Jayhawks have churned out seven straight wins since then, and they really took out their frustration from the loss to Michigan State by putting a beating down on Chaminade, 123-72, a week after losing to the Spartans.
Montana is 4-5, and head coach Travis DeCuire has to just be hoping for the game to be respectable. The Grizzlies beat Great Falls last time out, 79-59.
Wayne Selden Jr has finally come alive offensively — something Kansas fans have been waiting for a long, long time to see. He and Perry Ellis will have to be smart with their shot selection, pass up good looks for great looks and knock down threes when Montana dares them to do so. Conversely, the Grizzlies only hit 28.3 percent of their threes, so the Jayhawks will protect the paint and dare them to knock down jumpers.
The Grizzlies have to keep the ball out of Frank Mason’s hands because he has a knack for making plays when he does have the rock. Montana will have to put a shadow on the Jayhawks guard and force someone else to facilitate the offense. If the Grizzlies chase Selden off the perimeter and body up Ellis, they can try and force some turnovers to get into transition. But that’s a tall task because Kansas only turns the ball over 11.8 times per game.
Selden will be lights out from the outside and will lead the Jayhawks in scoring for this matchup. Ellis will contribute double figures, too, but Selden will be the spark on offense. Mason will set up his teammates with solid looks at the rim, and the Grizzlies won’t be able to hang around for very long. Montana won’t knock down enough jumpers to make Kansas respect it, and the Jayhawks will win easily.
