Four-star cornerback Kalon Gervin committed to Notre Dame on Monday morning, giving the Fighting Irish seven total commits in the 2018 recruiting class.

Brian Kelly woke up on Monday morning with the No. 6-ranked class in the 2018 recruiting cycle. Then the Fighting Irish picked up its seventh commit in the class and catapulted all the way up to No. 3, trailing only No. 1 Penn State and No. 2 USC.

The reason why is because 4-star prospect Kalon Gervin committed to Notre Dame. The country’s No. 28 cornerback and No. 296 overall player chose the Irish despite additional offers from Florida, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee and others.

Gervin released a statement regarding his decision to give Notre Dame his pledge.

“I am honored to say that I have committed to the University of Notre Dame. I wanna’ say thanks to everybody that helped me throughout my process, and thanks to all the coaches that recruited me. God Bless. God. Country. Notre Dame.”

At 5-foot-11, 170 lbs Gervin is a physical cornerback. He gets his hands involved early and will frustrate wide receivers off the line of scrimmage. His footwork is smooth, and he flips his hips cleanly. As he packs on a few more pounds and rounds out the ball skills, Gervin should evolve into a quality starting cornerback at the next level.

It’s a big move for the Irish to land Gervin. The Detroit native attends Cass Technical High School, which produced 5-star wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones and 4-star safety Jaylen Kelly-Powell in the 2017 class. Both signed with Michigan. Another one of Gervin’s former teammates, 4-star offensive guard Jordan Reid, signed with Michigan State.

Gervin is the second Michigan native to join Notre Dame’s 2018 class. He accompanies 4-star outside linebacker Ovie Oghoufo, who’s from Farmington Hills.
