Tom Crean has added a major addition to his 2017 class as four-star small forward Justin Smith announced his commitment to Indiana.
Smith revealed his decision after taking official visits to both Indiana as well as Villanova, eventually picking the Hoosiers over the reigning national champion Wildcats. Hailing from Des Plaines, Illinois, Smith will be staying much closer to home in Bloomington, Indiana rather than in Philadelphia.
Though he’s listed as a small forward, Smith is versatile enough to operate at both forward positions. He’s an extremely athletic player that makes a difference on both ends of the floor and plays with a high motor. He’s got an explosive first step and is great at attacking the rim and getting to the basket. Standing at 6-foot-7, Smith can finish around the rim against standard power forwards and centers at a higher rate than most wing players.
Smith is in the midst of developing a consistent jumper and three-point shot. His shooting abilities will need work before heading to Bloomington, though he has time to refine that craft before entering the NCAA.
Joining Smith in Indiana’s class of 2017 is three-star shooting guard Al Durham. Smith is the No. 91 overall recruit and No. 20 small forward in the 2017 class.
