Justin Fuente is Virginia Tech's "man" according to a Pat Forde report. The Hokies are apparently ready to make a run at the Memphis head coach.
November 24, 2015With Frank Beamer having announced his plan to retire at the end of this season, the Virginia Tech Hokies officially entered the market for a new head coach.
One of the names that has surfaced for the Virginia Tech job, and nearly every other opening out there, is Memphis head coach Justin Fuente.
Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports reports this week that Fuente is now the Hokies’ “man.”
Word is that athletic director Whit Babcock has his man, and has for a while now, and Fuente is that man. He’s done a remarkable job at previously moribund Memphis, going 18-6 over the past two seasons. It’s possible that tumbling dominoes at LSU and points elsewhere (namely Florida State) unspring this, but unlikely. A Fuente hiring would also keep Rich Rodriguez in place at Arizona.
Fuente took over a struggling Tigers program in 2012 and has since turned things around in Memphis. After going 4-8 and 3-9 in his first two seasons, respectively, he has led the Tigers to a 10-3 finish in 2014 and 8-3 record so far in 2015.
