Josh Rosen is out for the season with a shoulder injury, and the UCLA Bruins must now move forward without their star quarterback.

UCLA’s football season is not yet over, but the Bruins will have to carry on without their star quarterback.

Josh Rosen is likely out for the rest of the 2016 season with a shoulder injury, per multiple reports. Rosen suffered the injury in a 23-20 loss to Arizona State on Oct. 8, and there is nerve damage in his shoulder.

The extent of Rosen’s nerve damage is currently unknown, and it is one more blow in what has been a disappointing season for the Bruins. Rosen has thrown in practice, but he has done so with a weak arm. He will reportedly have an MRI on Thursday to determine whether surgery is needed.

There was a chance that Rosen could return this season, but with four games remaining and a 3-5 record hanging above them, the Bruins would be smart to simply keep him out and let him prepare for the 2017 season.

The true sophomore quarterback had missed the Bruins’ previous two games, which ended in losses to Washington State and Utah.

With Rosen out, redshirt senior Mike Fafaul, a former walk-on, has filled in as UCLA’s starting quarterback. In the loss to the Cougars, Fafaul completed 24-of-40 passes for 258 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Head coach Jim Mora really let him open it up a week later against the Utes when Fafaul threw 70 times. He connected on 40 of those throws for 464 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions. He set school records for both passing attempts and completions with that performance.

    UPDATE:
During the Pac-12 teleconference Tuesday, Jim Mora clarified Rosen’s status, “There is no nerve damage to his shoulder.” The UCLA head coach also did not rule out the possibility for Rosen to return this season.
