March 23, 2016Jordan Anthony, a top recruit at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., is looking to make a two-sport impact at the college level.
IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. has one of the most prominent football programs in, arguably, the nation’s most talent-rich state.
One of the most sought after recruits in the class is Jordan Anthony, a 4-star linebacker originally from Olney, Md., who transferred to IMG before his junior season.
Anthony recently spoke with Campus Insiders about his time at IMG and how playing alongside such talented prospects has sharpened his skills.
“It helps you better your game — makes you get better,” Anthony said of sharing the field with 4-star and 5-star recruits. “I loved that experience, and I’m excited about this season because we have a bunch of [highly rated] guys this year.”
Anthony played running back last season but is making the full-time switch back to linebacker — something he hasn’t done since his sophomore year.
“I love running back, but I think linebacker is a little more for me,” he said.
That may be a bit of an understatement, considering he was named the linebacker MVP at The Opening Regional in Orlando this past February.
That kind of skill mixed with a 6-foot-1, 210-pound frame is exactly why a bevy of schools, including home-state Maryland, are recruiting Anthony. Playing for new head coach D.J. Durkin and the Terrapins would be convenient for his family, but there are two other Big Ten schools on his list: Michigan and Ohio State.
Aside from being native to cold weather, the 4-star linebacker can envision himself as a part of that classic, intense rivalry between the Buckeyes and Wolverines.
“When they play each other, I know that atmosphere is crazy. Personally, I love rivalry games. That just gets me pumped up and excited, so I definitely love those,” Anthony said.
Of course, he had an up-close look at Jim Harbaugh’s team when Michigan held a chunk of its spring practices at IMG a few weeks ago.
“Just seeing them around campus, I was like ‘whoa,’” Anthony said of the Wolverines. “Those guys are huge — definitely different than high school, but it was fun. The spring game went well. So, that was definitely fun to watch.”
While NCAA rules prevented him from speaking to Harbaugh, Anthony already has an opinion on one of the game’s most polarizing coaches.
“I definitely feel like he’s a great coach,” he said of Harbaugh. “He’s always gonna bring that intensity to practice and to the games, too. He definitely seems like he’d be fun to have as a coach.”
While Anthony believes Michigan and Ohio State can compete with Alabama and the rest of the SEC, it’s those same SEC programs who are gaining momentum in his recruitment — specifically Florida and LSU.
The Gators and Tigers have been jockeying for position by bringing another dimension to the game — or rather another game to the dimension.
Anthony also plays baseball for IMG, and would like to compete in both sports wherever he attends school. Florida and LSU are two of the best baseball programs in the country — let alone in the SEC — currently ranking No. 1 and No. 13 in the nation, respectively.
“I like to be one of those players who can help out any way they can. If I’m needed to play on offense, then I’ll go do it.”
Athleticism aside, Anthony’s worth ethic and unwillingness to rest on his laurels must certainly be attractive to scouts.
“I like to earn my spot. If it’s not given to me at the beginning, I’ll make sure I earn it,” Anthony said.
When describing what kind of player fans can expect to see, Anthony painted the picture of a team-first individual who gives everything he has.
“I’m definitely a high-motor guy. I like to be the guy who’s flying around and making plays. I want my teammates to respect me and respect my game.”
In terms of making a decision on his future, Anthony plans to wait until after his senior season. Currently, Florida, LSU, Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma and Auburn are the schools he has the most interest in visiting.
