Report: Jimbo Fisher, Ed Orgeron, Larry Fedora Are LSU’s Top Head Coaching Candidates

Jimbo Fisher, Ed Orgeron and Larry Fedora are atop LSU’s list of candidates for the Tigers’ head coaching job, according to a report.
Les Miles’ fate with the Tigers ultimately came down to one play and one snap, which was one second too late. After they lost to Auburn, Miles was let go, and we all speculated on the names LSU could tab as its next head coach.
As the season has progressed, speculation has slowly shifted toward reality.
Jimbo Fisher, Ed Orgeron and Larry Fedora have risen to the top of the list of candidates for the Tigers’ head coaching vacancy, according to Nola.com.
Orgeron was named the interim head coach in September when Miles was let go. Not only has he led LSU to a 4-1 record since taking over, but he’s helped stabilize its 2017 recruiting class, which currently ranks No. 6 in the country. With the dead period for the class starting on Dec. 12, it’s believed that a decision on a new head coach will be made before then in order for the program to host recruits for official visits. National Signing Day is Feb. 1.
Fisher has been the top choice for some time now, dating back to rumors from last season when LSU had considered letting Miles go. A buyout for the Florida State head coach would be $5 million. Fisher agreed to a new deal with the Seminoles last year that runs through 2022 and will pay him $44 million in sum. Apparently, Joe Alleva, LSU’s director of athletics, will stop at nothing to lure Fisher, who would reportedly consider making the jump if the contractual details meet his demands.
“Jimbo was Joe’s guy from the beginning, and I just don’t see him passing on hiring him,” said an unnamed source close to the situation in Baton Rouge.
If the Tigers are unable to bring Fisher back to LSU, where he served as the offensive coordinator from 2000 to 2006, then the administration would be okay with Orgeron taking the job — provided he hires a high-profile offensive coordinator.
North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora has also been contacted about the job, as have Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy, who coached under Miles at Oklahoma State before taking over the Cowboys in 2005, and Houston’s Tom Herman.
While Herman still remains the hottest name on the coaching circuit, it would be difficult to see the Tigers passing up on Fisher. He has ties to the university and is only three seasons removed from a national championship season with FSU.
