Florida enters its biggest game of the young season against Tennessee on Saturday with some key players missing, including quarterback Luke Del Rio. Austin Appleby is the next man up for the Gators under center, and head coach Jim McElwain has confidence in the transfer from Purdue.

“He’s played. He’s been in games. He knows how to prepare,” McElwain said during his weekly press conference.

When serving as the backup to Del Rio, who suffered a MCL sprain in the win over North Texas, Appleby impressed McElwain with his work ethic.

“The preparation piece that he’s put in even when he wasn’t named the starter,” McElwain said when asked about his favorite thing about Appleby.

Here are some other quotes of note from McElwain’s time with the media on Monday.

    On Del Rio’s status

“He’s got a bum leg. He should be back some time. I don’t know when it’s going to be.”

On status of WR Antonio Callaway

“I don’t know whether he’ll play or not. We’ll try to get Callaway back. He’s hurting pretty good.”

On Martez Ivey’s ejection during Saturday’s game

“It’s whatever the rule is. He was disqualified. It’s on him.”
