Florida head coach Jim McElwain addressed the Oregon rumors that began circulating prior to former Ducks coach Mark Helfrich even being fired.
November 30, 2016Florida head coach Jim McElwain addressed the Oregon rumors on Wednesday.
Despite a matchup against No. 1 Alabama in the SEC Championship Game just three days away, the hottest topic surrounding Florida head coach Jim McElwain right now is the open Oregon coaching position. Rumors began circulating even before Mark Helfrich was fired that McElwain could be an option for the Ducks.
During his press conference on Wednesday, he addressed those rumors.
“No, I haven’t heard from Oregon, and the things that get thrown out there at times I don’t know how it gets linked at times,” McElwain said.
He also suggested a couple of reasons why his name might be mentioned with the Oregon opening.
“I guess slow news day. I’ve got my hunch there might be some recruiting things behind it. A lot of time on the phone last night [with recruits].”
McElwain stated that he is not interested in the job.
“Look, I’ve got a heck of a job. In case anybody checked, this is the University of Florida.”
With the rumors laid to rest – at least for the time being – McElwain can get back to the task on hand: Saturday’s game against Alabama.
“We’re playing in the SEC Championship Game. It really hasn’t crossed my mind.”
