Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh has confirmed that backup tight end Devin Asiasi will leave the program. Asiasi played in all 13 games for the Wolverines last season.

Jim Harbaugh and his staff pulled in a highly regarded 2017 recruiting class, but it didn’t include a tight end to provide more depth at the position.

Time will tell if that will come back to bite the Wolverines.

Harbaugh confirmed Tuesday evening that Devin Asiasi has decided to leave the program and will transfer. Asiasi played in all 13 games as a freshman last season as a backup tight end and was expected to compete for the starting job in 2017. He made only two catches for 18 yards and a touchdown but was a key contributor as a blocker.

Harbaugh did not provide specifics as to why the former 4-star prospect from California decided to transfer.

“He’s moving on, transferring,” Harbaugh told the media. “He leaves in great status. He was doing great in school, doing great in football, really popular and well-liked by his teammates. We wish him well.”

Standout tight end Jake Butt, who was one of the Wolverines’ leading receivers with 46 catches and four touchdowns in 2016, is expected to be selected in the first few rounds of the NFL Draft despite suffering an injury in the Orange Bowl loss to FSU. That leaves Michigan with Ian Bunting, Tyrone Wheatley Jr. and Sean McKeon as returning tight ends who made a catch last season, although the trio combined for only 10 receptions.

Asiasi wasn’t used much in the passing game, but his departure still leaves a hole to fill for the Wolverines, particularly as a blocker in the run game.
