March 8, 2017Three-star safety Jhevon Hill spoke with Campus Insiders regarding his recent commitment to UCLA. The California native has been sold on early playing time with Bruins, and he’s ready to help recruit other prospects.
On Wednesday, Jim Mora’s Bruins got on the board by adding their first pledge of the 2018 recruiting class, 3-star safety Jhevon Hill.
The San Bernadino, California native spoke with Campus Insiders and shed some light on why he chose the Bruins, a decision that came down to many factors.
“It feels good. I’m excited to see what my future is going to be like,” he said. “I’m the first DB commit in my class. Also, for me to be a Bruin is a great opportunity itself. It’s close to home, great coaching staff, great academics. It’s just an overall great fit.”
UCLA defensive backs coach Demetrice Martin, a.k.a. “Coach Meat,” sold Hill on life as a Bruin with a pitch that centered on early playing time — at a few positions.
“Coach Meat told me that I will play a big role my freshman year because he has no safeties. And he feels I can be that safety to come in and take that spot and fly to the ball, play corner, and he also said a little receiver. I haven’t really talked to the other coaches that much,” Hill said.
That’s a lot to handle. But Hill feels he can thrive in the UCLA defense, especially with Martin helping guide the way.
“I like that he puts [the safeties] down in the box sometimes. I like to switch it up and be versatile, so I’ll play anywhere they need me,” he said.
Of course, being the first one to commit in a class is a big deal. Lots of players take it upon themselves to evolve their roles from recruits to recruiters, and Hill already has a few names in mind.
“Of course, I would try to get everybody there, if possible,” Hill said before mentioning specific names. “Jeremiah Martin, Nikko Hall, Manuel Allen and Jonathan Perkins.”
Surely, Mora’s staff is hoping Hill is successful, as he’s the first of what could be many dominos to fall for the Bruins in the 2018 cycle.
