It was a long time coming, but Nick Saban finally lost his highly-respected defensive coordinator, Kirby Smart. On Tuesday evening, the University of Georgia announced the hiring of Smart as the football team’s new head coach. He’ll replace Mark Richt, who spent 15 years leading the Bulldogs.

With Smart’s departure, Saban is officially in the market for a new defensive coordinator. Smart had been on Saban’s staff since his arrival in 2007, and he was promoted to the DC position in 2008.

According to sources of FootballScoop, Saban’s new defensive coordinator could come by way of Smart’s new team.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Jeremy Pruitt will not be retained and is expected to be targeted by Alabama to fill Smart’s position.

Pruitt spent the last two seasons as Georgia’s defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. He spent the 2013 season in the same capacity at Florida State.

Prior to that he served on Saban’s staff at Alabama from 2007-12.

He also played defensive back at Alabama from 1995-96.
