Jeremy Pruitt is one of the candidates being targeted by Jim Harbaugh to fill Michigan's defensive coordinator position.
December 9, 2015Georgia’s hiring of Kirby Smart as its next head football coach means many things. While media members and fans are asking about what’s next for Smart and the Bulldogs, who’s asking about what’s next for Jeremy Pruitt?
Jim Harbaugh seems curious to find an answer.
According to 247Sports, Harbaugh will meet with the former Georgia defensive coordinator to discuss Pruitt filling the same position up in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Pruitt was an assistant coach at Alabama from 2007 to 2012 before joining Florida State as the Seminoles defensive coordinator in 2013 — for their championship run.
He then joined Mark Richt’s staff in 2014 as the Bulldogs defensive coordinator. Pruitt’s unit was ranked No. 9 in scoring defense and No. 8 in total defense this season. But when Richt was fired, the writing was on the wall.
So, here comes Harbaugh, who just so happens to be in the market for a defensive coordinator now that D.J. Durkin has accepted the job as the head coach at Maryland.
It might cost Michigan a little more to hire Pruitt. He made $1.3 million as Georgia’s defensive coordinator last season; Durkin made $800,000.
The Wolverines defense was ranked No. 4 in total defense and No. 11 in scoring defense in 2015.
If Harbaugh does hire Pruitt, it would be two years in a row Michigan plucked a defensive coordinator out of the Southeastern Conference. It worked out pretty well the last time — that’s for sure.
