Report: Jeremy Pruitt Hired As Alabama’s Defensive Coordinator

Jeremy Pruitt is Alabama's new defensive coordinator, according to a report.

    December 11, 2015

Alabama’s defensive coordinator position is no longer vacant.

247Sports’ Tim Watts reports the Crimson Tide will hire former Georgia defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt to the same position. Former Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart was recently hired as the Bulldogs’ new head football coach following the firing of Mark Richt.

With Smart coming in Pruitt was not retained and appeared to be a hot commodity in the coaching market. The Georgia defense ranked No. 9 in scoring defense and No. 8 in total defense this past season, so maybe that’s why Jim Harbaugh sought Pruitt out to discuss Michigan’s defensive coordinator job — D.J. Durkin left that position open when he accepted the head coaching job at Maryland.

Pruitt spent the past two seasons with Georgia after one season as Florida State’s defensive coordinator. Before that, he was as an assistant coach with Alabama from 2007 to 2012 under Nick Saban.

The Crimson Tide had the No. 1-ranked rush defense this season. It was also No. 2 in total defense and No. 3 in scoring defense.

Smart will be a tough act to follow. Let’s see if Pruitt can sustain that production.
