March 27, 2016Star Mississippi State signee Jeffery Simmons apologizes after he was caught on video hitting a woman.
Just a couple of months ago, Jeffery Simmons made headlines as the prized signee of Mississippi State’s 2016 recruiting class. Fast forward to late March and the five-star prospect from Macon, Miss. is now in the press for a troubling reason.
Simmons was caught on video hitting a woman last Thursday. According to Summer Rascoll of WCBI, police have not stated if they will pursue any action against Simmons.
On Saturday, Simmons took to social media, posting the following lengthy apology on his Facebook page.
“Where do I start? Where do I begin? Wow! Decisions, choices, and actions should always be carefully thought through when incidents occur. I take full responsibility for my actions that occured on Thursday evening. My apology goes out to the Taylor Family and especially to Sophia Taylor. What was I thinking? Honestly, I wasn’t thinking, all I could think was this is my family and I am supposed to defend my family. Many know my deceased nephews were my pride and joy, I do everything I do in honor of the life they never got the chance to live, and to listen to someone speak so terrible about them really caused me to make choices, decisions and act in a manor that was out of character for me. Is that an excuse?… NO! I truly hope that you will find it in your hearts to forgive me for my actions. I want to apologize to those that have supported me, those who look up to me and those who I consider family. I hope that each of you will accept my apology. I was raised in church, I’ve asked for forgivenesss and I pray for God’s continued guidance as I move forward in becoming a better person.”
Simmons was the nation’s No. 10-ranked recruit and No. 2 defensive end in the nation for 2016. He was supposed to be arriving in Starkville, Miss. this summer as the anchor of the Bulldogs defensive line for the next three to four years. But before he can do that, Simmons will now have to deal with the ramifications of his actions from last week. He’ll also be tasked with reshaping his image and proving that he is becoming a better person.
