Jeff Boals has been hired as the new Stony Brook men’s basketball head coach. The former Ohio State assistant fills a vacancy left by Steve Pikiell.
The Stony Brook Seawolves (quasi-non sequitur: one of the best mascots in sports) have a new men’s basketball head coach, and it’s former Ohio State assistant coach Jeff Boals, according to John Rothstein of CBS Sports.
Boals inherits a Seawolves program that went 26-7 and made the NCAA Tournament last season. Stony Brook’s previous coach Steve Pikiell left the program after the team’s march to the postseason to take over head coaching duties for the Rutgers Scarlett Knights.
This is Boals’ first head coaching job. After playing four years for the Ohio Bobcats (1991-95), he jumped immediately into the coaching ranks. Boals joined Ohio State’s staff in 2009 and has spent the past seven seasons with the Buckeyes as a part of head coach Thad Matta’s staff.
Boals was one of the Matta’s top recruiters, and will now look to parlay his success at Stony Brook. The Buckeyes went 21-14 in Boals’ final year on the staff and reached the second round of the NIT.
