USC got more good news on National Signing Day as 5-star defensive tackle Jay Tufele picked the Trojans over Ohio State, Utah, Michigan and BYU.

Clay Helton and his staff added another star to its already stellar 2017 recruiting class.

Five-star defensive tackle Jay Tufele chose USC on National Signing Day, spurning offers from Ohio State, Utah, Michigan and BYU, among many others.

Tufele is ranked as the No. 3 defensive tackle in the nation and No. 36 player overall in the 2017 class. Ohio State made a hard push for Tufele as Urban Meyer tried to add another quality player to his 2017 class that is ranked among the best in the nation, and many believed he was leaning toward the Buckeyes leading up to National Signing Day. Tufele is one of the few top recruits Meyer and his staff pursued hard but couldn’t land.

Utah figured to be the school that would get Tufele if he didn’t choose Ohio State. Tufele tweeted about his official visit to Utah on Sunday, but it wasn’t enough to sway him to Salt Lake City. Michigan and BYU were considered dark horses, but so was USC not long ago.

Minutes before Tufele’s announcement at his Utah high school, the Trojans received a pledge from 5-star offensive tackle Austin Jackson, who is ranked No. 5 at his position. Jackson and Tufele are the only 5-star recruits in USC’s class, but Helton and his staff have 11 4-star players and plenty of 3-stars heading to campus.
