It wouldn’t be a typical recruiting cycle if we didn’t have schools within the same conference plucking away prospects right before National Signing Day. For the latest occurrence, we have to turn our attention to the Pac-12.
After originally committing to UCLA on Aug. 14, 3-star prospect Jaxson Kirkland decommitted from the Bruins last Thursday. Then he turned around and committed to conference rival Washington late Monday night.
Kirkland, who’s from Portland, Oregon, is ranked as the No. 52 offensive tackle in the country and the No. 1 offensive tackle in the state of Oregon. He released a brief statement regarding his decision to give the Huskies his pledge.
“[I’m] blessed to announce my commitment to the University of Washington. Go Dawgs!”
At 6-foot-7, 305 lbs Kirkland has a mean streak to his game. He will block you until the whistle and then continue to bury you into the ground. He gets up to the second level well, but needs to work on his hand position when engaging defenders. If he can keep his hands inside, he’ll have an easier time of driving defensive linemen off the ball. Kirkland also needs to work on keeping his pad level down when firing out of his three-point stance, but there is a lot of room to grow. He could end up being a starter for Chris Petersen’s team down the road.
Washington now has 17 total commits in the cycle and moved up from No. 24 to No. 23 with Kirkland’s pledge.
