Five-star running back James Cook has cut his list of top schools to eight, this despite being verbally committed to Florida State for nearly a year.

James Cook: 5-star tailback in the 2018 class, and the No. 25 player in the inaugural CI 25 recruiting rankings. A brother to the best running back in Florida State Seminoles football history. A player who, according to brother Dalvin, is farther along at this stage than he was.

On Friday, Cook cut his top schools list down to eight. They are as follows:

    1. Florida State
    2. Alabama
    3. LSU
    4. Oregon
    5. USC
    6. Auburn
    7. Florida
    8. Georgia

That Cook is releasing a top schools list is interesting given that he’s currently committed to FSU. Then again, it’s not all that surprising given that he’s a serious talent and the Seminoles have a stacked backfield of young bucks. This past recruiting cycle, FSU signed 5-star tailback Cam Akers along with blue chippers Zaquandre White and Khalan Laborn. While no great player shies away from competition, that is quite a stable.

Cook has previously stated that he’ll weigh all of his options before permanently settling on a school. And while from the outside, it would appear that there’s pressure to follow in his brother’s footsteps, the 5-star talent insists that Dalvin has been nothing but supportive of little bro testing the waters.

“He’s not telling me not to go to Florida or to go to Florida State,” James said recently. “He says do whatever fits me.”

There’s a long way to go in the recruiting cycle, and if anything this top 8 list now publicly declares that, to the teams who made the cut, it’s anybody’s game.
