October 7, 2016Jalen Hurd injury update as of Thursday afternoon. The Vols’ starting running back is expected to miss the Texas A&M game.
The Tennessee Volunteers may be without a key playmaker heading into Saturday’s undefeated showdown with the Texas A&M Aggies. According to sources of GoVols247, starting running back Jalen Hurd is not expected to play against the Aggies.
Hurd, who leads the Vols in rushing with 101 carries for 407 yards, did not participate in practice again on Thursday. He has two rushing touchdowns on the season, second behind quarterback Joshua Dobbs’ five TDs on the ground.
Details of the injury keeping Hurd sidelined have not been fully divulged by head coach Butch Jones or the team. Hurd was limited in the second half of last week’s thrilling win over Georgia with what was originally described as a “lower extremity injury.” However, now GoVosl247 is reporting that it’s not a lower extremity injury, but rather an upper body injury.
“It’s going to be a game-time decision [regarding Hurd],” Jones said during a radio interview with WGFX-FM (Nashville, Tennessee) on Thursday. “It’ll occur later today and into tomorrow as well. He has been at practice, but he did have an injury. He’s been working his way through it, doing his due diligence, but we have to make sure he’s ready to go. We’ll know a little but more later today and then tomorrow. We’ll practice before we leave for Texas A&M.”
In addition to the ground game, Hurd has also been a weapon in the passing game coming out of the backfield. He has 7 catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns.
Waiting behind Hurd is talented backup Alvin Kamara. While his total touches and yardage is less than Hurd, he’s averaging more than the starting running back at 4.3 yards per carry, compared to 4.0. Kamara had his highest number of carries this season against Georgia with 16.
