Jacob Eason's decision sparked his dad to open up on the process. Here's what he had to say following the trip to Athens.
December 14, 2015Jacob Eason’s decision timeline has been a rollercoaster of sorts, especially because there wasn’t even supposed to be a decision.
Eason, the No. 1-ranked pro-style quarterback and No. 2 overall prospect by 247Sports, has been committed to Georgia since July of 2014. That was supposed to be it, done deal, finished.
But then Georgia moved on from longtime head coach Mark Richt. All of the sudden, Eason had a choice to make, and he just spent the past 16 months envisioning his life with black and red tint.
Since then, the highly-touted quarterback from Lake Stevens, Wash. has taken an official visit to Gainesville, Fla. to check out the Florida Gators, a team he was preparing to hate for the next several years. Eason’s gotten in-home visits from Jim McElwain, Doug Nussmeier and new Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart. But most recently, Eason took an official visit to Athens, Ga. this past weekend with the idea that a decision would be made subsequently.
Eason’s dad, Tony Eason, spoke to Rusty Mansell of 247Sports, commenting on the recent visit to Athens.
“Georgia was Georgia,” he said. “It was the same place, just the people have changed, so we spent a lot of time with Kirby (Smart) with our in-home last week and on this visit.”
Tony Eason then spoke about the recruiting battle going on between Florida and Georgia.
“Both places are pro-style offenses, they are both SEC-East schools, we like both coaching staffs, we are so far away from those two schools, we have not been caught up in all the rivalry between them yet,” he said.
Obviously, at the end of the day, Eason can only commit to one program, and it seems a decision has been made.
“I think there is one made, but we are going to look at it a little more and I think something should be out soon,” Tony Eason said.
Florida already has commitments from four-star quarterback Feleipe Franks and three-star quarterback Kyle Trask in the 2016 class. But a Will Grier suspension and subpar play from Treon Harris could lead to Eason winning the job — should he choose Gainesville as his new home.
If he picks Athens, he’ll have to compete with Greyson Lambert, Brice Ramsey, Sam Vaughn and Nick Robinson, who are coming back at the quarterback position. Barring any other announcements, junior Faton Bauta is the only quarterback who intends to transfer.
But early playing time could come with the Bulldogs, too.
This is a life-changing dilemma for Eason. It’s also a moment that could dictate the SEC East for a long, long time when you consider the ripple effects. It’s a little too late to buckle up because this crazy ride appears to be coming to an end.
