The Oregon football program has been in the headlines lately due to the hospitalization of some Ducks players following a conditioning incident.
However, that hasn’t stopped prospects from buying into what head coach Willie Taggart and his staff have been selling on the recruiting trail.
On Saturday night, 4-star prospect Isaac Slade-Matautia and 3-star recruit Austin Faoliu committed to Oregon.
The Ducks now have 16 total commits in the cycle and sit at No. 31 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings.
Slade-Matautia, from Honolulu, is ranked as the No. 29 outside linebacker in the country and the No. 1 outside linebacker in the state of Hawaii.
At 6-foot-1, 220 lbs Slade-Matautia brings a lot of range to the position, as he swarms to the ball and can make plays from sideline to sideline. He’s extremely athletic and can pack a punch when he lowers his shoulder and drives through a ball carrier.
As for Faoliu, a Santa Ana, California native, he’s ranked as the No. 44 defensive tackle in the nation and the No. 4 defensive tackle in the state.
The 6-foot-4, 285-pound defensive lineman has played defensive end and has the quickness to provide an interior pass rush. But his real strengths show when stopping the run. He does a great job of getting penetration and making stops in the backfield, but he also does well in sitting, reading the tailback, disengaging and making a play.
Both should find quality roles in the defense within a couple of years before eventually stepping into starting positions.
