September 24, 2016The Iowa Hawkeyes have made it to the NCAA Tournament. Here’s a preview of the team and a prediction of how they’ll do during March Madness.
Team: Iowa Hawkeyes
Record: 21-10
Conference: Big Ten
Head coach: Fran McCaffery
How they got here: At-large bid
Iowa gives teams headaches thanks to its balance and ability to knock down the open jumper. Forward Jarrod Uthoff can score inside and out, and he uses his perimeter game to create space for his teammates to cut to the bucket. He is a quality shot blocker, too. Peter Jok can fill it up and does a good job of getting to the rim, and Mike Gessell is a solid passer who can hit the long ball. This is a balanced team that has surprised more than a few teams this year.
The Hawkeyes have looked tired over the past couple of weeks, and their confidence seems to be draining a bit. Uthoff needs to be assertive with the ball or Iowa’s offense takes a step back, and Jok can be streaky. Foul trouble is a huge issue because when the top three aren’t all on the court, Iowa looks ordinary.
The Hawkeyes are a mess right now, and it would really be surprising for this team to regain its confidence during the NCAA Tournament. A first-round loss isn’t out of the question, and a trip to the Sweet 16 would be a stunner.
